Around 40 people involved, police launch investigation

At least 11 people were injured after a violent clash broke out inside a gurdwara in Moers, located in the Duisburg locality, prompting a major police response.

Videos circulating on social media, purportedly from inside the religious premises, showed a physical altercation between two groups, with reports indicating the use of sharp objects, including knives and kirpans.

    Large-scale altercation, police response

According to reports, around 40 individuals were involved in the clash, leading to the deployment of special police tactical units.

Witnesses said that in addition to bladed weapons, pepper spray and a firearm were allegedly used during the incident.

    Possible trigger: management dispute

While the exact cause of the violence is under investigation, initial findings suggest the clash may be linked to disagreements over the election of a new management board and control of gurdwara funds.

A 56-year-old member of the congregation, who witnessed the incident, told Bild,
“This must have been planned. Shortly before the service began, the attackers suddenly had pepper spray and sprayed their opponents. Then one of them fired a pistol. And I also saw knives.”

    The witness added,
“There have been problems and conflicts for some time. But it’s mainly about influence and who has the final say here at the temple. When the attack began, many fled the temple in panic; it could have ended much worse. Fortunately, no one’s life is in danger,”

    Injuries and investigation

All 11 injured individuals were treated at the scene by paramedics and an emergency physician.

Police detained at least one suspect at the site, while the criminal investigation department has launched a probe to determine the sequence of events and identify those involved.

Authorities said the firearm used in the incident has not yet been recovered. However, shell casings found at the scene suggest it may have been a blank-firing pistol.
