Second India visit within a year

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India in September to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed on Tuesday.

The summit will take place on September 12 and 13 and is expected to bring together leaders of major emerging economies amid growing global geopolitical and economic tensions.

Putin’s second India visit within a year

This will mark Putin’s second visit to India within less than a year.

The Russian president had earlier travelled to New Delhi in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on defence, energy and strategic cooperation.

BRICS summit to be held in New Delhi

The upcoming summit follows the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last year under the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”.

India, as the current chair of the bloc, is hosting this year’s summit amid growing global concerns over conflicts, economic uncertainty and disruptions to trade and energy supplies.

    BRICS expands influence

Originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, BRICS has evolved into a major geopolitical and economic grouping seeking greater influence for emerging economies in global governance.

The bloc has expanded significantly in recent years with the inclusion of:

    • Egypt
    • Ethiopia
    • Iran
    • United Arab Emirates

The grouping now represents nearly half of the world’s population and a substantial share of global GDP and trade.

Jaishankar calls for greater BRICS cooperation

Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar urged BRICS nations to strengthen cooperation in dealing with geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions and global conflicts.

Speaking at a BRICS foreign ministers’ conclave in New Delhi attended by representatives from Russia, Iran, Brazil and other member states, Jaishankar stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.

“We meet at a time of considerable flux in international relations,” Jaishankar said.

“Ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainties and challenges in trade, technology and climate are shaping the global landscape,” he added.

The meeting gained significance amid rising concerns over the impact of the West Asia conflict on global energy and economic stability.

    BRICS represents major global share

BRICS currently comprises 11 emerging economies and accounts for:

    • Nearly 49.5 per cent of the global population
    • Around 40 per cent of global GDP
    • About 26 per cent of global trade

The New Delhi summit is expected to focus on economic cooperation, global governance reforms and regional security issues.
