Marco Rubio says US welcomes immigrants from India
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday dismissed racist remarks against Indians and Indian Americans in the United States as “dumb comments”, saying every country has “stupid people” who make such statements.
Rubio made the remarks during a press briefing in New Delhi alongside External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, while responding to a question on instances of racism targeting Indians in the US.
“I’ll take that very seriously about the comments. I’m sure that there are people who have made comments online and in other places because every country in the world has stupid people. I’m sure there are stupid people here; there are stupid people in the United States who make dumb comments all the time,” Rubio said.
The US Secretary of State, who is on a four-day visit to India, emphasised that the United States remains a welcoming nation for immigrants from across the world.
“Our nation has been enriched by people who have come to our country from all over the world, become Americans, assimilated into our way of life, and contributed greatly,” he added.
Rubio also addressed concerns regarding new US immigration rules that require certain immigrants already residing legally in the country to leave and apply for permanent residency from abroad. He clarified that the reforms are part of a broader overhaul of the American immigration system and are not specifically targeted at India.
“We’ve had a migratory crisis in the United States. This is not because of India, but broadly, we have had over 20 million people illegally enter the United States over the last few years, and we have had to address that challenge,” Rubio said.
“The US is undergoing a process of reforming the system by which we choose how many people come into our country, who comes in, and when they come in…it is not a system that is targeted at India. It’s being applied globally,” he added.

Earlier during his visit, Rubio highlighted the strategic nature of India-US ties, saying the two countries share common democratic values and work closely on multiple global issues.
Rubio also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation across several sectors. After the talks, PM Modi said India and the United States would continue to work closely for global peace and development.
