PM Modi called for secure maritime routes, protection of seafarers and stronger international trust during the G7 outreach session in Evian

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday told world leaders at the G7 Summit that maritime routes must remain secure and seafarers should be able to perform their duties without fear.

Speaking at the outreach session in Evian, France, PM Modi stressed that lasting solutions to global conflicts can only emerge through dialogue, diplomacy and international cooperation. His remarks came days after three Indian mariners were killed in a US military strike on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Oman.

Referring to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the Prime Minister said instability in the region has affected global trade and economic activity. He also noted that Indian citizens had lost their lives amid the ongoing conflict.

“Shared my thoughts at the Outreach Session on ‘Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity’ at the G7 Summit in Evian. In a world that is getting more interconnected and interdependent than ever before, this subject becomes all the more vital. But, partnerships can succeed only when they are founded on trust,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

Trust is the world’s most important strategic asset

The Prime Minister argued that the world today is not facing a shortage of resources, but a shortage of trust.

Mutual trust is the most important strategic asset today. Sadly, the world does not suffer from a shortage of resources; it suffers from a shortage of trust. The future of our partnerships depends on rebuilding this trust,” he said.

PM Modi urged countries to move beyond the traditional donor-recipient model and build partnerships based on solidarity, equality and mutual respect.

    India’s development partnerships

Highlighting India’s approach to international cooperation, the Prime Minister said New Delhi views the world as one family, guided by the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

He cited initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Global Biofuels Alliance, Mission LiFE and the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign as examples of India’s partnership-driven model.

“The true test of partnership is not what we build for others, but what we enable others to build for themselves,” he said, emphasising India’s focus on capacity building and skill development in partner countries.

    Message for the Global South

PM Modi said the Global South is seeking genuine partnership rather than charity.

“More than support, it seeks partnership. We must move beyond the donor-recipient mindset and work as equal partners. Partnerships must be linked to dignity, not dependency,” he said.

He also highlighted India’s development initiatives in Africa, including cooperation in training, water resources, agriculture and energy.

    G7 leaders in attendance

The outreach session was attended by leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump.

India participated in the G7 Summit as a guest country at the invitation of France.
