NIA slaps fresh charges on Hafiz Saeed over Pahalgam carnage

India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday slapped fresh charges against Pakistan-based terrorist mastermind Hafiz Saeed, founder and chief of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and its proxy The Resistance Front (TRF), for orchestrating the horrific Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 innocent people dead.

The anti-terror agency filed a supplementary chargesheet before the NIA Special Court in Jammu, holding Saeed accountable both in his individual capacity and as the head of the dreaded outfits.

Hafiz Saeed, long designated as a global terrorist and mastermind behind several major attacks on India, now faces the heat in one of the deadliest strikes on civilians in recent years.

The move is being seen as a strong message against those directing terror from safe havens across the border.

Saeed has been charged under stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, including provisions for waging war against India and hatching a criminal conspiracy from Pakistani soil.

“This chargesheet exposes Pakistan’s deep-rooted conspiracy, Hafiz Saeed’s direct role, and is backed by solid scientific evidence and ground-level investigation,” sources in the NIA said.

The latest filing supplements the massive 1,597-page original chargesheet submitted on December 15, 2025, which had already named Pakistani handler Sajid Jatt, three terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev in July 2025, two arrested operatives, and the LeT/TRF as a legal entity.

The carnage that shocked India

On April 22, 2025, Pakistan-sponsored terrorists carried out a cold-blooded, religion-based targeted killing in the scenic Baisaran valley of Pahalgam. Twenty-five innocent tourists and one local guide were gunned down in the dastardly attack. The case was initially registered as FIR No. 25/2025 at Pahalgam Police Station and later handed over to the NIA by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The NIA is continuing its probe under case RC-02/2025/NIA/JMU to fully unravel Pakistan’s role in sponsoring cross-border terrorism on Indian soil.
