PM Modi says the government will intensify its crackdown on paper leaks, promising fast-track courts and stronger laws as protests over the NEET controversy continue
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday issued a late-night video message addressing the NEET paper leak controversy, assuring students that the government is treating the issue with utmost seriousness and promising tougher legal action against those responsible.
Calling paper leaks a matter of grave concern, the Prime Minister said the issue has caused immense distress to lakhs of students and their families and stressed that the Centre has been working relentlessly over the past two-and-a-half months to bring those responsible to justice.
“I know paper leaks are not an ordinary issue. They have caused immense pain to lakhs of students and their parents,” Modi said, adding that several accused have already been arrested and sent to jail.
Highlighting the government’s response, the Prime Minister said the immediate priority was to ensure that students did not lose an academic year. He said the Centre acted swiftly to conduct the re-examination for nearly 22 lakh candidates and announced the results without unnecessary delay.
Modi said, however, that conducting the examination alone was not enough and asserted that those behind paper leaks must face swift punishment. He revealed that he had directed officials to prepare a proposal for setting up fast-track courts to expedite trials in examination fraud cases.
According to the Prime Minister, the proposal was finalised after extensive consultations and will be placed before the Union Cabinet for approval. The government also plans to introduce the legislation in Parliament at the earliest during the upcoming session.

The protest received a boost after environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk extended his support and began an indefinite hunger strike at the protest site.
