Responding to Pakistan’s latest remarks on Kashmir, India accused Islamabad of suppressing civil liberties in POJK
India launched a sharp attack on Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), accusing Islamabad of systematically suppressing the rights and freedoms of people in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) while rejecting its repeated attempts to raise the Jammu and Kashmir issue at the global body.
Speaking during the UNSC Open Debate on Strengthening the Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, said the situation in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir reflects a long-standing pattern of repression that has continued for decades.
“The world is witness to the continued suppression of basic rights, freedom of expression and association, and the stifling of fundamental freedoms of Kashmiris in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. These are not isolated instances but part of a larger design by the Pakistani establishment that has continued for close to eight decades,” he said.

Responding to Pakistan’s latest attempt to raise the Kashmir issue at the Security Council, India firmly reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is, was, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India. Ambassador Parvathaneni asserted that the only unresolved issue is Pakistan’s illegal occupation of Indian territory.
He also accused Pakistan of facing a broader democratic crisis, saying the pattern of repression extends well beyond Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
Referring to recent political developments, the Indian envoy cited the incarceration of political leaders, including a former Prime Minister, the alleged sidelining of the principal opposition party, and what he described as a constitutional takeover by the military through the 27th Amendment.
“These actions have decimated any semblance of democracy,” he said, urging Pakistan to address its internal challenges instead of promoting what he called fabricated narratives at international forums.
Parvathaneni further questioned why developments within Pakistan receive limited scrutiny at the United Nations despite concerns over democratic institutions and civil liberties.

“Pakistan would do well to look inward and address the real issues in the country rather than resorting to fabricated narratives aimed at scoring domestic political points and misleading the wider UN membership,” he added.
Reiterating India’s longstanding position, the envoy criticised Pakistan for attempting to misuse the UN platform for its political agenda and maintained that the constitutional and legal status of Jammu and Kashmir is non-negotiable.
