The STF recovered digital material during the operation and has widened its investigation
In a major counter-terror operation, the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) has arrested an alleged operative of the Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), with investigators suspecting that he was part of a conspiracy targeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
The accused, identified as Hamid Mandal, was arrested during an STF operation in Purba Bardhaman district. Investigators believe he maintained links with Sajjad Bhat, a known Jaish operative, and are examining whether he was involved in collecting intelligence related to the Chief Minister’s movements and security arrangements.
Surveillance material recovered
According to investigators, a mobile phone and several documents were seized during the operation. Preliminary analysis of the recovered material allegedly contained surveillance-related information connected to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, raising concerns of a possible terror conspiracy.
The STF is now analysing the digital evidence to determine whether the accused acted alone or was part of a wider terror module operating in the region.
Probe widens
Security agencies are also investigating the suspect’s alleged links with Jaish-e-Mohammed and whether he had received logistical or operational support from other individuals. Officials are examining communication records, financial transactions and possible cross-border connections.
No official statement has yet confirmed that an attack was imminent, but investigators are treating the recovered material as a significant lead in the ongoing probe.
Security stepped up
The arrest has prompted heightened security measures as central and state agencies continue to assess the nature and scale of the alleged conspiracy.
The investigation remains underway, with officials indicating that further arrests cannot be ruled out if additional links emerge during the probe.
