Investigation intensifies as CID teams fan out across Kolkata amid widening Trinamool split

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday carried out searches at locations linked to former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as part of its probe into the alleged forged signatures of MLAs that has deepened the political crisis within the party.

According to sources, CID officials, accompanied by personnel from the Kalighat police station and a sizeable contingent of women police officers, reached the party’s central office at 30B Harish Chatterjee Street in Kolkata around noon. The searches are linked to an ongoing investigation into allegations that signatures of several Trinamool legislators were forged on a proposal submitted to the Assembly Speaker seeking recognition of the Leader of Opposition.

    CID cites Abhishek Banerjee’s response

Officials involved in the investigation said the searches were initiated following a response submitted by Abhishek Banerjee to an earlier notice issued by the agency.

According to CID officials, Abhishek Banerjee informed investigators that the signatures of MLAs were collected at the party’s central office. Based on that statement, the agency decided to conduct searches at locations connected to the case.

Sources said three separate CID teams were deployed:

    • One team searched Mamata Banerjee’s residence.
    • A second team visited Abhishek Banerjee’s office.
    • A third team conducted searches at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence.

Mamata Banerjee is currently in Delhi.

    Signature controversy triggers political storm

The controversy centres around a proposal submitted to the Assembly Speaker seeking recognition of senior Trinamool leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition.

The issue escalated after two Trinamool MLAs, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, alleged that the resolution contained forged signatures. In their complaint to the Speaker, the legislators claimed the document was “manufactured and fabricated” and alleged that several signatures appeared in block letters rather than individual handwriting.

The allegations led to the filing of an FIR and the launch of a CID investigation.

    MLAs expelled after complaint

The political fallout intensified when the Trinamool Congress expelled Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha from the party, accusing them of anti-party activities.

The expulsions came shortly after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari publicly disclosed the names of the two legislators who had challenged the authenticity of the signatures.

The investigation is now expected to focus on how the signatures were collected, who handled the documents and whether any forgery was committed during the process.
