West Bengal has revoked the award as the controversy over the BJP MP’s remarks continues to escalate
The West Bengal government has withdrawn the Banga Bibhushan, the state’s highest civilian honour, from BJP Rajya Sabha MP Nagendra Ray, popularly known as Ananta Maharaj, following controversy over his remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Ray had received the prestigious award from the Mamata Banerjee-led government in February this year. The state has now revoked the honour amid mounting outrage over his alleged derogatory comments about Netaji.
State government takes action
The decision to withdraw the award comes as the controversy over Ray’s remarks intensifies in Bengal.
The BJP MP has faced criticism over comments questioning Netaji’s legacy, triggering a political and public backlash in the state. The issue has become particularly sensitive in Bengal, where Subhas Chandra Bose remains one of the most revered figures of the freedom movement.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had also directed police to take strict action against people making derogatory remarks about Netaji, including through social media. He called for such posts to be deleted and for those responsible to apologise.
BJP faces pressure over Ray’s remarks
Ray’s comments have also triggered criticism from within the BJP. Veteran BJP leader Tathagata Roy questioned whether the party’s central leadership was aware of the controversy and warned that continued disrespect towards Netaji could alienate voters in Bengal.
The controversy has therefore put the spotlight not only on Ray’s remarks but also on the BJP’s response to a politically sensitive issue in West Bengal.
Banga Bibhushan withdrawn
The Banga Bibhushan is among West Bengal’s highest state honours and is awarded to individuals for exceptional contributions in various fields.
Ray was among the recipients honoured earlier this year. The decision to revoke his award now marks a dramatic reversal, with the state government withdrawing an honour it had itself conferred just months ago.
The move is likely to further intensify the political confrontation surrounding Netaji’s legacy, with rival parties accusing each other of exploiting one of Bengal’s most iconic historical figures for political purposes.
