India urged Iran to protect commercial shipping and pursue diplomacy amid rising regional tensions
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, expressing India’s deep concern over the escalating hostilities in West Asia and strongly urging that commercial shipping and seafarers must not be targeted under any circumstances.
In a post on X following the conversation, Jaishankar said India remains firmly committed to dialogue and diplomacy while reiterating New Delhi’s consistent position that attacks on civilian maritime traffic are unacceptable.
India raises concern over maritime security
During the telephonic conversation, Jaishankar conveyed India’s concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the region and emphasised that uninterrupted commercial shipping is critical for global trade and energy security.
He also made it clear that India condemns attacks on commercial vessels and seafarers regardless of who carries them out, urging all parties to exercise restraint.
Iran briefs India on regional developments
According to Jaishankar, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi briefed him on Tehran’s assessment of the evolving situation in West Asia and the diplomatic discussions currently underway.
The Indian minister reiterated that New Delhi continues to support dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable path towards reducing tensions in the region.
Shipping safety remains a key concern
India’s latest outreach comes amid growing concerns over attacks on commercial vessels operating in and around key maritime routes linked to the Gulf.
The government has repeatedly stressed that civilian shipping and seafarers must remain outside the ambit of military confrontation, warning that any disruption to maritime trade could have wider implications for global supply chains and energy markets.
The conversation also follows India’s continued diplomatic engagement with regional stakeholders as New Delhi seeks to safeguard its strategic and economic interests while advocating de-escalation through peaceful dialogue.
