The standoff between Jharkhand’s government and protesting job aspirants intensified on Monday as the JPSC-JSSC agitation entered its 17th day, with students marching towards the state Assembly after talks with the government failed to produce a breakthrough.
Thousands of aspirants participating in the protest have been demanding reforms in the recruitment system, cancellation or re-examination of disputed papers and an independent probe into alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
The planned Assembly march marked a major escalation in the agitation, which has continued despite the state government’s recent concessions.
Students march towards Assembly
The protesting aspirants began their march towards the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly in Ranchi on Monday, seeking to press their demands directly before the government.
Security was tightened across the city ahead of the march, with authorities putting up multiple layers of barricades around the Assembly and restricting movement in sensitive areas.
The protesters, however, pushed through several barricades as they continued towards the Assembly. Videos from the ground showed students breaching the third layer of barricading during the march.
Talks fail to end deadlock
The Assembly march came after negotiations between representatives of the protesting students and the government failed to resolve the dispute.
The students have maintained that the government’s recent measures do not go far enough and continue to demand a comprehensive investigation into alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.
One of their key demands remains a CBI probe into the allegations surrounding JPSC and JSSC examinations. Protesters have rejected the resignations of three JPSC members as insufficient, arguing that the move does not address the larger questions surrounding the recruitment system.
Government has announced several measures
The state government has already agreed to several measures amid the protests.
These include cancellation of the 14th JPSC preliminary examination and two backlog examinations, along with a proposed probe by the Enforcement Directorate into alleged financial irregularities.
The government has also announced plans for fast-track courts and a reform exercise aimed at addressing concerns surrounding the recruitment process.
However, the concessions have failed to persuade protesting aspirants to withdraw their agitation.
Hunger strike adds pressure
The protest has also seen a hunger strike by student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, whose health has reportedly deteriorated during the agitation.
Mahto joined the Assembly march in an ambulance after continuing his hunger strike, adding further urgency to the confrontation between the protesters and the administration.
The worsening health of the hunger striker has become another major point of concern for protesters as the agitation enters its third week.
Security tightened as confrontation grows
The administration had deployed additional security forces and erected barricades ahead of the march to prevent protesters from entering restricted areas around the Assembly.
As the march progressed, students broke through several barricades, prompting authorities to step up their response. Reports from the ground said police used water cannons as protesters continued pushing towards the Assembly.
The developments have turned the recruitment controversy into a major confrontation between the Jharkhand government and thousands of young job aspirants.
Students refuse to back down
The protesters have made it clear that the agitation will continue until their core demands are addressed.
For the aspirants, the dispute is not limited to individual examinations but concerns the credibility, transparency and accountability of Jharkhand’s entire government recruitment system.
With talks failing, the protest entering Day 17 and students now taking their agitation to the Assembly gates, pressure is mounting on the government to find a resolution before the confrontation escalates further.
