Omar Abdullah takes swipe at viral ‘We are Gen Z’ remark by Kargil tourist
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has taken a swipe at a viral video of a tourist confronting security personnel at a checkpoint in Kargil, saying the phrase “We are Gen Z” risks becoming a new expression of entitlement.
The video shows a woman arguing with personnel after tourists were stopped for several hours near the Minimarg check post in Dras. She is heard saying, “We are Gen Z. We will not tolerate this,” before urging other tourists to leave.
The woman questioned the traffic restrictions and alleged that tourists were being made to wait for hours. Other tourists gathered at the spot and some were seen supporting her.
We are Gen-Z and we won’t tolerate this nonsense. Kashmiriyo ke sath toh karte hi the ab tourist ke sath bhi karne lagye. pic.twitter.com/7aluOiFUjJ

Reacting to the video on X, Abdullah compared the phrase “We are Gen Z” to the familiar expression “jaantay nahin ho mera baap kaun hai”, often used to flaunt influence or privilege.
Abdullah said the phrase could lose its positive association if it was used as a threat whenever someone faced a perceived slight. “The quickest way to erode any Gen Z goodwill is to start using it as a threat at the slightest perceived affront,” he wrote.
The incident reportedly involved a police checkpoint and not the Indian Army. The Army clarified that its personnel had no connection with the incident.
Traffic restrictions are not unusual on routes in the Kargil region, where movement can be affected by security requirements, weather and road conditions. Police sources cited by The Times of India said the particular stoppage was linked to the movement of senior officials along the route.
The video, originally recorded in July, resurfaced on social media on Wednesday and quickly drew attention, prompting Abdullah’s response.
