Imran Khan has returned to Adiala Jail hours after being shifted to a hospital in Islamabad for a medical check-up following a Supreme Court order

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been moved back to Adiala Jail, hours after he was taken to a hospital in Islamabad for a medical check-up.

Khan was shifted from prison to Shifa International Hospital around midnight following a Supreme Court order directing authorities to provide him with specialised medical care amid concerns over his health.

According to Pakistani media reports, the 73-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder underwent a medical evaluation at the hospital before doctors cleared him to return to prison. He was subsequently taken back to Adiala Jail under tight security.

Why Was Imran Khan Taken To Hospital?

The Supreme Court had ordered authorities to move Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours and allow him access to specialised medical care, including a medical panel featuring his personal physician.

Khan’s lawyers have repeatedly raised concerns about his health in prison, including significant loss of vision in his right eye. Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023. He and his supporters have alleged that the cases against him are politically motivated, an allegation denied by the Pakistani government.

The Pakistani government had earlier challenged the Supreme Court’s decision, arguing that Khan’s medical treatment could be provided in jail or at a government hospital.

    What Happened At The Hospital?

Khan underwent a medical check-up during his brief stay at Shifa International Hospital. Doctors subsequently deemed it safe for him to remain in custody, following which he was shifted back to Adiala Jail.

PTI supporters gathered outside the hospital after news of Khan’s transfer emerged. His movement between the prison and hospital was carried out amid heavy security.

    Imran Khan’s Health Concerns

Khan’s lawyers have said his health has deteriorated during his imprisonment and that he has suffered significant vision loss in his right eye.

The Supreme Court’s decision to order specialised medical care came amid growing concerns over his health and demands from his lawyers and supporters for access to appropriate medical treatment.

The latest hospital visit comes amid an ongoing dispute between Khan’s supporters and the Pakistani government over the treatment and medical care available to the former prime minister in custody.
