Singer challenges NYC mayor over opposition to Bhagwat’s August 29 gathering
American singer and actress Mary Millben has criticised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over his opposition to an upcoming event featuring RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at Madison Square Garden, accusing Mamdani and other critics of being motivated by opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.
Millben took to X to hit out at what she described as the “socialist” opposition to the August 29 event. She argued that the privately organised programme would go ahead because Madison Square Garden operates on commercial principles. She also advised Mamdani and his supporters to raise funds, rent the venue and organise their own rally.
Mamdani opposes Bhagwat event
Mamdani had said he does not support the planned event, while acknowledging that New York City may not have the legal authority to cancel a private gathering. He said his concerns stemmed from what he described as an “exclusionary vision” associated with the RSS and contrasted it with his understanding of India as a pluralistic and secular republic.
The event, titled the “Universal Oneness Celebration,” is scheduled for August 29 and is being organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue. Organisers say the gathering will promote shared heritage, interfaith dialogue and unity among Hindu Americans. Bhagwat is expected to address the gathering as part of the RSS’s centenary-year global outreach.
Millben also said she liked the event’s “Oneness” theme and expressed hope that the gathering would include meaningful discussion on religious freedom in India. Her remarks have added another layer to the growing debate over Bhagwat’s New York appearance, which has also drawn criticism from several local organisations.
