Landfall expected between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, with gusts up to 150 kmph
Cyclone Arnab is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast as a very severe cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday. Landfall is projected between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, very close to Yanam.
IMD Cyclone Warning Centre Director P L N Murthy said the storm moved westwards over the western Bay of Bengal at 23 kmph on Monday and intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm at 2:30 am on Tuesday. At landfall, winds are expected to reach 125 to 135 kmph, with gusts up to 150 kmph.
IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty said the system was about 380 km south of Gopalpur. It will keep moving west-northwestwards until Tuesday evening, then turn northwestwards. She said it is likely to retain its intensity at landfall, with maximum sustained winds of 125 kmph.
Fishermen have been told not to venture into the sea until the morning of October 30. Several ports are under warnings. Kakinada has been given the Great Danger 10 (GD-10) signal. Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram are under GD-9, and Machilipatnam and Nizampatnam under GD-8. Kalingapatnam, Krishnapatnam and Vadarevu have Local Cautionary 3 (LC-3) signals.
Odisha is also expected to see rain. Mohanty said widespread rainfall with intense thunderstorms and lightning is likely on Tuesday, with heavy to very heavy rain at a few places. The same pattern is forecast for Wednesday, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. She advised people to take precautions.
