A student died and 10 others were injured after a large tree collapsed onto a school bus in Mumbai’s Chembur amid heavy monsoon rains
A student was killed and at least 10 others were injured after a large tree collapsed onto a school bus in Mumbai’s Chembur area on Tuesday, amid heavy rain and strong winds triggered by the southwest monsoon.
The incident took place on Road No. 11 in Chembur when the bus, carrying 13 students, was struck by the falling tree.
Several injured students were rushed to nearby hospitals. Some were admitted to Jain Hospital, where a few are reported to be in serious condition, while four students are undergoing treatment at Zen Hospital.
Rescue operation underway
Emergency response teams reached the spot soon after the incident and launched a rescue operation.
Officials used cutting equipment to remove the fallen tree and rescue one child who remained trapped inside the damaged bus.
Authorities are yet to provide further details on the condition of all the injured students.
Residents allege civic negligence
Local residents alleged that they had repeatedly approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), requesting that trees in the area be trimmed or removed as they posed a safety risk.
According to residents, a similar incident had occurred in the locality earlier, but despite multiple complaints, no preventive action was taken.
The allegations have raised fresh questions over tree maintenance and monsoon preparedness in the city.
Heavy rain lashes Mumbai
The incident comes as Mumbai continues to receive heavy rainfall and thunderstorms following the arrival of the southwest monsoon.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy showers and thunderstorms across Mumbai and its suburbs during the day.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as adverse weather conditions are expected to continue.
