Nine flights diverted and more than 400 delayed amid severe weather

Heavy rain turned parts of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport into a waterlogged stretch on Friday, leaving passengers struggling to reach the terminal gates with their luggage. Visuals from the airport showed travellers with trousers rolled up, pushing trolley bags through accumulated water.

The downpour came as Delhi faced severe weather, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a red alert for the national capital. The intense rain disrupted flight operations, with reports of diversions and hundreds of delays at the airport.

Passengers forced to wade through water

The waterlogging was reported around the airport’s entry area, turning what is normally a busy passenger zone into a difficult passage. Videos and photographs showed people navigating through ankle-deep water while trying to reach the terminal.

One passenger told ANI that she had been waiting for the water level to recede before attempting to move towards the arrival gates.

Flight operations hit by weather

The disruption extended beyond the terminal area. Nine flights were diverted and more than 400 were delayed, according to NDTV Profit, as thunderstorms and heavy rain affected operations.

Airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status and allow additional travel time because of both weather-related disruptions and difficult road conditions around the airport.

The latest episode has once again put Delhi’s drainage and airport infrastructure under scrutiny, particularly as extreme downpours increasingly test the capital’s ability to keep critical transport hubs functioning.
