Microsoft outage: Option to rebook or claim refund temporarily unavailable

On Friday, budget carrier IndiGo cancelled over 200 flights following the global outage in Microsoft applications that affected operations in India and abroad. The Indigo took to social media platform X to inform that “flights are cancelled due to the cascading effect of the worldwide travel system outage, beyond our control”.

The airline added that the option to rebook or claim a refund is temporarily unavailable. It also shared a list of flights that were cancelled on Friday (July 19) and Saturday (July 20).

Five flights of IndiGo scheduled to depart from the two airports in Goa were cancelled on Friday while many other flights were delayed due to the breakdown in Microsoft cloud services.

Additionally, passengers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad also witnessed the cancellation of their flights to Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu said that his ministry and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) are actively managing the situation. The civil aviation ministry in collaboration with AAI has implemented manual backup systems to maintain operational continuity, Naidu said in a statement.

We have instructed all airlines and airport authorities to keep passengers informed about their flight status and provide necessary assistance,” Naidu said, adding that additional measures include regular updates on flight status and deployment of extra staff to assist passengers and address their concerns.

The outage also impacted flights around the world, especially the United States.

Frontier Airlines grounded flights for over two hours due to issues with Microsoft’s services. It resumed operations later. The carrier cancelled 147 flights while over 200 were delayed.

Sun Country and Allegiant also said that they had to delay 45 percent and 27 percent of their total flights.
