Khan’s sons allege prolonged isolation and inadequate medical care as Pakistan rejects claims

The sons of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan have made serious allegations about their father’s treatment in prison, claiming that authorities are “blatantly trying to kill him” and keep him isolated for as long as possible.

Sulaiman Khan and Kasim Khan made the allegations during an interview with former England captain Michael Atherton for Sky Sports. Kasim claimed that their 73-year-old father is being kept in isolation for more than 23 hours a day and that his prison conditions have deteriorated sharply.

Sons raise concerns over Imran Khan’s health

Sulaiman also questioned why his father had not been examined by an independent doctor. He said the brothers became concerned after Imran was taken to a government medical facility for a few hours following a Supreme Court-directed medical examination and was then returned to prison.

The brothers said they have not physically met their father since 2022 and claimed their attempts to visit him have been blocked over visa-related issues. Their last telephone conversation with Imran was reportedly in March this year.

Imran Khan has been held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since 2023 following convictions in corruption-related cases. He was recently taken to a hospital for a medical examination before being returned to prison. His lawyers and supporters have repeatedly raised concerns over his health and prison conditions.

Pakistan objects to Sky Sports interview

The interview triggered a major controversy during the ongoing England-Pakistan Test at Lord’s. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a complaint with Sky Sports over the broadcast and reportedly threatened to prevent the Pakistan team from returning to the field after the lunch break. The match eventually resumed after discussions with the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The allegations come amid growing international concern over Khan’s treatment. A group of former international cricket captains, including Kapil Dev and other prominent players, has called for humane treatment and proper medical care for the former Pakistan captain.

Importantly, the allegations made by Khan’s sons have not been independently established. Pakistan authorities have rejected claims that Imran Khan is being denied adequate medical care or access to family and lawyers.
