The MEA says 275 Indian nationals remain missing in Nepal after devastating flash floods, while 166 have been rescued so far

India remains in close contact with Nepalese authorities over the search for missing citizens

The devastating flash floods in Nepal have left 275 Indian nationals still unaccounted for, while 166 Indians have been rescued, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday as search and relief operations continued in the disaster-hit Himalayan nation.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remains in close contact with the Nepalese government, its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant state governments in India to trace those still missing and assist affected citizens.

India steps up rescue and relief efforts

Jaiswal said India appreciates the efforts of Nepalese authorities in rescuing Indian nationals. The government is coordinating with local authorities as information on rescued citizens continues to come in.

India has also sent around 95 tonnes of relief material on seven aircraft, along with 54 personnel, to support rescue and relief operations in Nepal.

1,907 Indians cross into Nepal from China

The MEA also provided an update on Indians affected on the Chinese side of the disaster zone.

As many as 1,907 Indian nationals have safely crossed into Nepal from China, while Chinese authorities have told India that no Indian travellers are currently stranded in the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

Nepal disaster toll continues to rise

The flash floods followed a devastating glacier/ice and rock collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, triggering catastrophic flooding along river systems in the region. The disaster has killed more than 1,290 people in Nepal, with thousands still missing, according to the latest reports.

Rescue teams are continuing to search flooded settlements and hydropower facilities for survivors. In a rare sign of hope, two workers were pulled alive from a hydropower tunnel nine days after the disaster.

For India, the immediate focus remains locating the 275 missing nationals, while continuing humanitarian assistance to Nepal as the scale of the catastrophe becomes clearer.
