Admin says it held four rounds of talks and set up a drafting committee, but protesters stayed on at an unauthorised site
Jamia Millia Islamia has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against Congress MPs Imran Masood and Imran Pratapgarhi and others. The university accuses them of trespassing on campus and inciting unrest during an ongoing student agitation, an official said on Sunday.
The complaint will fuel a charge already being made against the opposition: that a campus dispute over student union elections is being turned into a political platform by outside leaders. Masood is a Lok Sabha MP and Pratapgarhi sits in the Rajya Sabha. According to the university, the complaint names them and others.
The protest began nearly two weeks ago. A section of students wants the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) restored, with elections not held since 2006. Four students have been on a hunger strike for 13 days.
The university says it has bent over backwards to resolve the matter. A seven-member committee of professors has held four rounds of talks with students. On October 21 it notified a JMISU Constitution Draft Committee, and it has promised to review disciplinary action over the October 12 protest.
On Saturday, more than 1,500 teaching and non-teaching staff, led by Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, marched to Gate 7 to persuade protesters to end the agitation, the university said. It says staff appealed repeatedly for nearly two hours but the protesters would not leave. The administration also alleges that some students pushed security guards and teachers.
The university maintains that Gate 18 is the designated protest site and that the occupation of the Gulistan-e-Ghalib lawns was unauthorised. It shifted classes online on Saturday, citing security concerns, and says gates and libraries will stay shut until further notice.
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) tells a different story. It alleges that hundreds of police personnel detained students outside Gate 7 and that officials dragged women students while dismantling hunger-strike tents. It has demanded student representation on the drafting committee, election dates this semester, withdrawal of disciplinary action, and the resignation of the chief proctor and security adviser. The Delhi Police have not responded to the complaint or to the detention allegations.
