Modi Govt’s big step: Preparation to open campuses of foreign universities in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government has taken a step towards allowing leading foreign universities such as Yale, Oxford, and Stanford to set up campuses and award degrees as part of an overhaul of the South Asian nation’s higher education.

On Thursday, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar announced draft norms for establishing campuses of foreign higher educational institutions in the country in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 and invited suggestions and feedback from the public that seeks to facilitate entry and operation of overseas institutions in the country for the first time.

M Jagadesh Kumar said the foreign universities and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will need a nod from the UGC to set up their campuses in India.

He explained that universities that want to set up their campuses in India should be ranked within the top 500 of overall or subject-wise global rankings. Universities, that have secured subject-wise ranking, will be allowed to offer the same subjects on their Indian campuses.

This means universities such as America’s Yale, Stanford, and Harvard, and British institutions like the University of Cambridge, and Oxford King’s College could all set up campuses in India, permitting Indian students to get top-notch education without having to travel.

The local campus can decide on admission criteria for domestic and foreign students, fee structure, and scholarship, according to the draft. The institutions will have the autonomy to recruit faculty and staff.

This move will enable Indian students to obtain foreign qualifications at an affordable cost and make India an attractive global study destination. The move will also help overseas institutions to tap into the nation’s young population.

  1. Needs more campuses in india (in all states) from reputed foreign universities. Some of the universities and colleges quality in India not upto the level. Education standards deteriorated in almost all parts of India, looks state governments needs publicity only, they are pushing to pass all students in exams (easy questions & liberal paper valuation). Needs strict monitoring and action from central government on education quality in all states. Sylabus and questions must be tough in exams. Terminate all underperformed teachers from schools and colleges. Close poor performing colleges and universities is the only solution to save Indias future generation.

  2. THis could be a huge mistake. This is a silent and elegant way of breaking India with their woke culture, which has already made head way into Ashoka University, JNU, etc. This will happen for sure if we let the humanities such as anthropology, history, ethnic studies, etc, May be not so with the technical fields, but those universities will never agree for such selective proposal.
