MHA refutes report of Centre’s decision to move Rohingyas residing in Delhi to Economic Weaker Section flats
Amid the furor caused over Hardeep Singh Puri’s tweet regarding EWS flats benefits to illegal Rohingyas, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a clarification in a series of tweets that it has not given any directions to provide Economic Weaker Section (EWS) flats to such illegal refugees at Bakkarwala area in the national capital.
According to reports, the Ministry has even asked Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government to ensure that all such illegal foreigners remain at their present location.
The MHA said in its tweet, “Govt of Delhi proposed to shift the Rohingyas to a new location. MHA has directed the GNCTD to ensure that the Rohingya illegal foreigners will continue at the present location as MHA has already taken up the matter of their deportation with the concerned country through MEA.”

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Government had proposed to shift Rohingyas to a new location however the MHA had asked the government to ensure they ‘stay put’ as the Centre was already negotiating with the concerned country on their deportation.
Earlier on Wednesday, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had lauded the Centre’s decision to shift the Rohingya refugees to EWS flats. Puri also said that India has always welcomed those who have sought refuge in the country and termed the move a landmark decision.
Puri said in a tweet, “India has always welcomed those who have sought refuge in the country. In a landmark decision, all Rohingya refugees will be shifted to EWS flats in the Bakkarwala area of Delhi. They will be provided basic amenities, UNHCR IDs & round-the-clock Delhi police protection.”
