Budget Session 2023: President Murmu in Parliament

Ahead of the opening day of the Budget Session President Droupadi Murmu delivered the customary address to the joint sitting of both Houses – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – in the Central Hall of Parliament.

This is President Murmu’s maiden address to the joint sitting of both Houses.
Pres Murmu said, “By 2047, we have to build a nation that will be connected to the pride of the past and which will have all the golden chapters of modernity. We have to build an India that will be ‘Aatmanirbhar’ and capable to fulfill its humanitarian duties.”

She said, “Garibi Hatao is not just a slogan anymore. My government is working to have a permanent solution to the problems of the poor and empowering them. My government has awakened the aspirations of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. Now that basic facilities are reaching them, these people are able to see new dreams.”

“The ‘aspirational districts’ programme is now being repeated at the block level, for which, 500 blocks have been identified in the country. The ‘vibrant villages’ programme to develop villages in border areas has also been introduced,” Pres Murmu said.

She added, “Earlier, there was a long wait for a tax refund. Today, a refund is received within a few days of filing the Income Tax Return. My government has worked for every section of society without any discrimination. As a result of the efforts of my government in the last few years, many basic facilities have either reached 100% population or are very close to that target.”

“An effective system has been put in place to end corruption. The government is of the clear opinion that corruption is the biggest enemy of democracy and social justice. A continuous fight against corruption going on for past years,” she further said.

Earlier, addressing the media Prime Minister Narendra Modi said there is global attention on this year’s Budget which will take forward the thought of ‘India first, citizen first‘.

PM Modi said, “Taking the thought of ‘India first, citizen first’ we will take this Budget Session of Parliament forward. I am hopeful that the opposition leaders will present their views before the Parliament”.

Praising President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi said, “Today is important, President Murmu will address the joint session of Parliament for the first time. The President’s first address to the joint session of Parliament is a matter of pride for our Constitution, and especially for the respect of women. The whole world has its eyes on India.”

He further said, “The Budget Session begins today and at the beginning itself, credible voices from the world of the economy have brought in a positive message, a ray of hope, and a beginning of enthusiasm.”

“In today’s global circumstances, not only India but the entire world is looking at India’s Budget. Amid the unstable global economic situation, India’s Budget will attempt to meet the hopes and aspirations of the common citizens, and the ray of hope being seen by the world glows brighter – for this, I firmly believe that Nirmala Sitharaman will make all efforts to meet those aspirations,” PM added

    VAT – 5%
    Corporate tax – 12%
    The corporate tax is applicable for those companies which have turnover or profit over certain baseline (this baseline is not yet announced)

    UAE citizens (emiratis) get subsidized – food & vegetables, electricity charges are at deep discount, fuel (petrol, diesel), education fees, travel expenses (inside & abroad tourism visits) for entire family
    For expats they charged 2 or 2.5 times more (minimum average) on everything.
    Now it is market oriented economy
    Unmarried couples or girlfriends are allowed to accompany to hotel rooms
    Alcohol consumption free unlimited & NO drinking license requirements
    Gays / Transgender restrictions are also relaxed (almost nil)
