Terrorist encounter erupts in Kishtwar

Ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address an election rally in the land-locked Doda district on Saturday, two soldiers of the Indian Army sacrificed their lives during a counter-terrorism operation in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar on Friday.

The operation was launched in the upper reaches of Chatroo based on intelligence inputs about the presence of heavily armed Pakistani terrorists.

It is believed these Pakistani terrorists belong to the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorist outfit and are responsible for the terror attack on the Indian Army soldiers in the Desa forest area of Kishtwar on 16 July.

An Indian Army captain along with three other soldiers was ‘killed in action’ during a fierce firefight in the area.

According to a spokesman of the Nagrota-based White Knight Corps of the Indian Army, a contact was established and a scout leading the patrol exchanged heavy volume of fire with the terrorists at around 3.30 p.m. on Friday.

In the ensuing firefight, four army personnel were injured. Later two soldiers who have been identified as Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar and Sepoy Arvind Singh succumbed to their fatal injuries during treatment in the military hospital.

Meanwhile, the entire security grid has been alerted in the Jammu region and additional troops were deployed in and around the venue of the Prime Minister’s rally in Doda to prevent any other incident of terrorist violence.

This is the third major incident in the last five days. A total number of six Pakistani terrorists have been eliminated in these three operations so far. Four terrorists have been eliminated in the ongoing operation in the Khandara top area of Basantgarh since September 11.

Two terrorists were neutralised by the joint team of security forces on September 11 and two more terrorists were eliminated on September 13.

In addition, two infiltrators were neutralized in the Laam sector of Nowshera on September 9.

All eyes are set on the day-long visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address an election rally in the Doda district. This is his first visit ahead of the first round of polling across 24 Assembly segments on September 18.

Out of these 26 Assembly seats, 16 fall in Kashmir valley and 8 in Jammu region.

Three districts of Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban are going to polls on September 18. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections. The BJP had won 4 out of 6 seats in the 2014 Assembly polls. This time there are a total number of eight seats across these three districts.

During his election rally, the Prime Minister is expected to boost the morale of the party workers and the residents in the area. The BJP is aiming to garner maximum seats in the region to bolster its poll prospects. In 2014, BJP won 25 out of 37 Assembly seats across the entire Jammu region. This time the party is harping on the slogan of forming its government on its strength.
