AIIMS Delhi to start clinical trials of Bharat Biotech’s intranasal booster vaccine

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi will start the clinical trials of Bharat Biotech’s intranasal booster vaccine – BBV154 dose against COVID-19 from Friday, said sources. The trials will be done at nine different locations.

Earlier, senior epidemiologist, AIIMS Delhi, Dr. Sanjay Rai, had said that nasal vaccine could be a game-changer in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BBV154 is Bharat Biotech’s intranasal vaccine. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had granted permission to the Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company to conduct clinical trials of intranasal booster vaccine dose in the country in January 2021.

Bharat Biotech chairman Krishna Ella had earlier said that the intranasal vaccine would be the best choice. “This vaccine can be given to two-month-old babies as well and a nasal vaccine can be administered to the entire population, except for cancer patients and pregnant women.”

People above 18 years of age, with a vaccination history of more than five months but less than seven months are eligible to participate in the phase 3 trial. The registration will be done either via email or WhatsApp.
