AirTrunk plans to develop 5 GW of data centre capacity across India by 2030, strengthening the country’s cloud and AI infrastructure ecosystem

Asia-Pacific hyperscale data centre operator AirTrunk plans to invest more than Rs 3 lakh crore (USD 30 billion) in India by 2030, marking one of the largest proposed investments in the country’s digital infrastructure sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the investment following a meeting with AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda on Friday. The company also plans to develop 5 GW of data centre capacity across multiple locations in India.

Sharing the development on X, PM Modi said India’s digital infrastructure ecosystem is witnessing rapid growth and that AirTrunk’s proposed investment would significantly strengthen the country’s position in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

“AirTrunk has announced plans to invest around Rs 3 lakh crore in India and develop 5 GW of data centre capacity. This is among the largest proposed investments in the country’s digital infrastructure ecosystem,” the Prime Minister said.

He added that the investment would help create jobs, strengthen local supply chains and support innovation-driven economic growth.

AirTrunk, a leading hyperscale data centre specialist operating across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region, said India is expected to become one of its most important long-term investment markets.

CEO Robin Khuda credited India’s digital transformation and policy environment for creating significant opportunities for technology infrastructure investments.

“India has the scale, talent and ambition required to become a global AI powerhouse. AirTrunk is excited to support that vision,” Khuda said in a company statement.

The proposed investment programme is backed by global investment giants Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). AirTrunk said the expansion would support India’s ambitions to emerge as a global hub for cloud services, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.

The announcement follows AirTrunk’s entry into the Indian market through its acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra in April this year. The acquisition gave the company a development pipeline of approximately 600 MW across Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.

AirTrunk said its future projects across multiple states and union territories are expected to generate significant employment opportunities and contribute to the growth of India’s technology ecosystem.

Founded in 2015, AirTrunk has developed and operates some of the largest hyperscale data centre campuses across Australia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, serving major cloud, content and enterprise customers.
