Anti-India elements on a rise?

One of the largest mosques in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar Jamia Masjid – reverberated with anti-India slogans after the namaz of the first Jumma of Ramzan. Along with Azadi slogans, shouts of “Nara-e-Taqbeer, Allahu Akbar” can also be heard in the video clip.

Stones were pelted at the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel deployed outside the mosque. The personnel thereafter came into action and disbursed the crowd.

Jamia Masjid was opened for prayers only last month, after remaining shut for almost two years due to COVID-19.

The crowd gathered in the mosque was heard chanting Azadi slogans and hailing Zakir Musa, India’s most wanted terrorist. The Indian Army had killed Musa in Kashmir in 2019, after trapping him in the Tral district. Musa split from the Hizbul Mujahideen and declared his allegiance to Al-Qaeda in 2017.

Jamia Masjid is one of the biggest mosques in Kashmir and has been central to many important developments throughout the history of the Valley. Hurriyat leader and chief priest of the mosque, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq delivers the weekly sermons here.

“Today afternoon there were Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid wherein huge number of gathering took place, around 24 to 25 thousand persons attended the Friday prayers. After the culmination of prayers about 25 youths started anti-national sloganeering for while. There was also an altercation between these youths and the volunteers of the Intezamia committee of Jamia Masjid. This created a situation of ruckus inside the mosque. Later they were dispersed from the mosque. A case in this regard was registered in Nowhatta under FIR no 16/2020 under sections 124A and 447 of IPC,” the report quoted a police spokesperson as saying.

The spokesperson added, “Raids were conducted at different locations and the main instigator of the sloganeering namely Basharat Nabi Bhat S/o Gh Nabi Bhat R/o Hawal, Nowhatta was apprehended and formally arrested in the case. Many more suspected youths have been called for questioning and will be formally arrested as soon as their role comes forth in this case. It also came out that the main accused had received instructions from Pakistan-based handlers of terror outfits to disrupt Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid and cause a law and order situation.”
