NC, Congress come together for Jammu & Kashmir Assembly polls
Former alliance partners Congress and National Conference (NC) have once again decided to contest the upcoming Assembly polls in Jammu & Kashmir by forging a pre-poll alliance on all 90 seats.
The president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Dr Farooq Abdullah made the formal announcement in this regard.
Interacting with the media persons immediately after meeting the Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Malikkarjun Kharge, and K C Venugopal at his Gupkar residence Dr Farooq Abdullah said that the pre-poll alliance with Congress is final, and will be approved by this evening.
“The alliance is on track and it will go on well with God’s grace. It is final and will be approved by this evening,”
“The documents will be signed and will be done by today evening,” Dr Farooq said and added, “The alliance has been done on all 90 seats of Jammu and Kashmir”.
The NC president said that Congress, NC, and CPI(M) are on the same page and will fight Assembly elections together. He hoped that with the collective efforts of the alliance, the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir would be returned.
However, he maintained that doors are still open for everyone to join the alliance and give a befitting reply to those who damaged the country’s institutions and its secular fabric.
To a query, he replied that the meeting with Congress chief Malikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi took place in a very cordial atmosphere.
On Wednesday Congress national president MalIikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi arrived on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to hold deliberations with party leaders and workers ahead of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Both leaders left for Jammu on Thursday afternoon after holding a meeting with the National Conference (NC) leadership in Srinagar.
Congress committed to ensure restoration of statehood to J&K: Rahul Gandhi
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi Thursday said that his party and the I.N.D.I.A block are committed to restoring statehood to J&K as soon as possible.
Speaking to media in Srinagar, Rahul said that it is “our priority in the Congress party and also in the I.N.D.I.A block, to restore Statehood in J&K as soon as possible.”
He said that Congress was expecting statehood before Assembly polls but “polls were announced which is a step forward.” “We hope to see democracy restored,” he said and reiterated that it was for the first time since independence that a state was reduced to a UT.
“I have heard and seen UTs being converted into states but J&K is an exception. We have made it clear in our election manifesto that it was our priority to restore the democratic rights of the people of J&K and Ladakh. My message to people of J&K is in whatever manner we can help them, we are ready,” he said, adding that “nafrat ke bazaar mein mohabat ki dukaan kholna chahtay hain, Izat say, bhaicharay say.”
BJP can’t suppress the peoples’ voices anymore in J&K: Congress President Kharge
Speaking on the occasion, All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief, Malikarjun Kharge said that efforts are on to forge an alliance based on feedback from “our local leaders.” “We want to keep the entire opposition along,” he said. Kharge said that Congress is committed to ensuring the return of statehood.
He said that BJP couldn’t ensure elections in J&K. “The party announced polls under pressure in the wake of Supreme Court directions,” the AICC chief said.
“I want to put it on record that BJP can’t suppress the peoples’ voices anymore in J&K. Congress is committed to work for the welfare of the people of J&K.”
He said that J&K is witnessing unprecedented unemployment. “Tall claims of BJP that post Article 370, terrorism has been wiped out in J&K, have fallen flat. Infiltration has gone up and terrorism incidents have also witnessed a spike,” he said.
Addressing the Congress worker’s meeting in Srinagar, Rahul said, “All you (workers) should remain assured that there will be no compromise on the interests and respect of party workers and leaders”.
Rahul said that he met AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge and decided to visit J&K first. “We want to give a message to the people of J&K and their representation and statehood is supreme for us,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge said that if Congress wins polls from J&K, the party would be able to conquer the entire India.
“People of J&K must repose trust in Congress so that we can pull you out of the mess and despair,” he said and urged people to vote for the party in large numbers in the upcoming Assembly elections commencing September 18. He said that Congress expects at least 40 to 45 seats in the upcoming polls
