Biden conveys US support for reforming global institutions to better reflect India’s influential role

US President Joe Biden expressed his “immense appreciation” for India’s leadership on the global stage, particularly highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s significant role in the G20 and commitment to strengthening the QUAD alliance to foster a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

During a meeting at his residence in Greenville, Biden commended Modi for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine, marking the first such visits by an Indian Prime Minister in decades. He praised Modi’s message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine, particularly in the energy sector, as well as his emphasis on international law and the UN Charter.

The discussions between the two leaders underscored the US-India Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership, which they described as “the defining partnership of the 21st century.” Modi characterized the meeting as “extremely fruitful,” expressing gratitude for Biden’s hospitality and the opportunity to address both regional and global issues.

Reflecting on the current state of US-India relations, the leaders noted an unprecedented level of trust and collaboration, affirming that their partnership must be rooted in democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and equal opportunities. They emphasized that the US-India Major Defense Partnership has become a cornerstone of global security and peace, with enhanced operational coordination and defense innovation.

Both leaders expressed “unrelenting optimism” about the future, confident that the collective efforts of their peoples, civic sectors, and governments would elevate the partnership to new heights in the coming decades. Biden highlighted India’s proactive approach to tackling pressing global challenges, including its role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its efforts to address the impacts of worldwide conflicts.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to freedom of navigation and the protection of commerce, particularly in the Middle East. Modi is set to co-lead the Combined Task Force 150 in 2025, working alongside Combined Maritime Forces to secure vital sea lanes in the Arabian Sea.

Biden also conveyed US support for reforming global institutions to better reflect India’s influential role, including advocating for India’s permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council. They agreed that a closer US-India partnership is crucial for creating a cleaner, inclusive, and more secure future for the planet.

Additionally, both leaders celebrated the successes of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), which aims to deepen cooperation across key sectors such as space, semiconductors, and telecommunications. They committed to enhancing collaboration in artificial intelligence, quantum technology, biotechnology, and clean energy.

In a show of solidarity, Modi and Biden emphasized their ongoing efforts to work with like-minded partners through the QUAD and initiatives like the US-India-ROK Trilateral Technology initiative, which aims to build resilient supply chains and maintain a competitive edge in innovation.

As the partnership between India and the United States continues to flourish, Modi’s leadership and vision stand out as pivotal elements in addressing the challenges of the modern world and fostering global cooperation.
