Why no decision on UCC Bill in Parliament?
The top leadership of the BJP has so far maintained that there’s no move by the Union government on introducing the Uniform Civil Code. But by Winter Session of Parliament in November the NDA government must come clear on UCC.
But in states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat the state governments are busy finalizing the UCC report. The expert committee formed by the Pushkar Singh Dhami-led government in Uttarakhand on Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which has been meeting civil society representatives and state-based organizations, seems to have extended the consultation process to the national capital. After members of the committee, led by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, met Law Commission representatives at Uttarakhand Bhavan in Delhi earlier this month, it has now called people to give their views on UCC at the Constitution Club on June 14. The committee’s moves have given way to fresh speculation on introduction of UCC by the Centre — BJP circles are abuzz with speculation that the Centre will bring in a law in the Winter Session of Parliament if the response to the Uttarakhand panel is positive. The committee is, in fact, learnt to have come to the national capital following directions from the Centre.
