BJP hits back, says people of India rejected Rahul Gandhi
Reacting to Rahul Gandhi‘s ‘death of democracy‘ remark, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the former Congress president and said that in attacking PM Modi and BJP, Gandhi is criticizing the country.
BJP responded by questioning if democracy exists in the Congress party, which has been labelled a “dynastic party.” BJP said that all attempts of the party to find a non-Gandhi leader have failed and an ailing Sonia Gandhi is forced to fill up the post as interim president.
Shortly after Rahul Gandhi’s press conference, former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Congress leader made “shameful and irresponsible” comments and noted that it was his grandmother and then prime minister Indira Gandhi who had suspended people’s democratic rights by imposing the Emergency.
Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Stop demeaning the institutions of India to safeguard your corruption and misdeeds… If people don’t listen to you, why are you blaming us? If people saw dictatorship, it was during the Emergency when people, including opposition leaders and editors, were jailed, judges superseded and censorship imposed. Indira Gandhi had then spoken about having a “committed judiciary”.
“Why do you blame democracy when people of India reject you with repeated regularity,” he added and asked Gandhi if there is democracy within his party which has some “good leaders” but it is all about the Gandhi family.
Rahul Gandhi will have to face consequences for what he has done, Prasad said.
“You will have to face trial and answer the ED’s questions,” he said. The government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been taking strong measures against corruption, and the Congress and the system around it are rattled because democracy has become synonymous with financial irregularities when the opposition party was in power, he alleged.
He noted the assets allegedly acquired by several opposition leaders and their associates through graft have been seized by the ED in different places ranging from Delhi to Mumbai and Kolkata.
Adding further he said, “Rahul Gandhi clearly lied. Did Congress take part in the discussion held over inflation in the parliament? The discussion on inflation and unemployment is the excuse, the real reason is to scare the ED and save the family.”
Speaking about the National Herald case, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The case was already filed before our government came to the power. The complaint was registered to the Magistrate who took cognizance of it and Section 420 (cheating) and 120B (conspiracy) were charged. The court found that this appears to be a clear case of cheating and conspiracy to grab public property.”
Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a press conference at the party headquarters in the national capital on Friday morning amid the ongoing protests by the Congress party in the city on issues of price rise and unemployment.
Rahul Gandhi’s press conference comes just days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sealed the Young Indian Limited office located in the National Herald building on Wednesday. While speaking with the media, the Congress leader attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government and said that the country has been witnessing the “death of democracy”.
