    A dramatic video has captured the moment a massive section of a Himalayan glacier collapsed, providing fresh visual evidence of the event that triggered catastrophic flash floods across Nepal and Tibet. The footage appears to show a huge mass of ice and rock breaking away from the mountain before plunging into the valley below.

    The disaster struck on August 26 after the glacier collapse at high altitude sent ice, rocks, mud and debris into a river system, creating a powerful surge downstream. The resulting floods devastated communities along the Nepal-Tibet border, washing away homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

    Glacier collapse triggered deadly flood

    The collapse occurred at an elevation of around 5,200 metres, with the falling mass plunging roughly 1,200 metres and gathering huge amounts of rock and sediment. The debris temporarily blocked the river before the natural barrier gave way, unleashing a destructive wall of water downstream.

    The US Geological Survey initially investigated whether an earthquake had triggered the event but later concluded that the seismic signal was generated by the landslide itself. The collapse was subsequently assessed as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event.

    The disaster has killed more than 600 people across Nepal and Tibet, with thousands still missing. Rescue operations continue amid difficult terrain and concerns over further flooding from a newly formed lake near the collapse site.
