El Niño uncertainty prompts Centre to prepare power contingency plan

With forecasts indicating uncertainty over the impact of El Niño in the coming months, the Centre is preparing an advisory for states and power utilities to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and prevent shortages during periods of high demand. The move comes as authorities seek to strengthen preparedness against weather-related disruptions that could affect both power generation and consumption.

The Ministry of Power is expected to issue the advisory to state governments, electricity distribution companies (discoms) and generation utilities, asking them to closely monitor demand patterns, maintain adequate fuel stocks and ensure power plants remain operational during peak consumption periods.

Centre seeks early preparedness

Officials are considering preventive measures rather than reactive interventions, with the advisory expected to focus on advance planning for possible weather-related challenges.

States may be asked to review generation capacity, transmission readiness and emergency response mechanisms to minimise the risk of power outages if electricity demand rises sharply.

Focus on fuel availability and plant readiness

The advisory is also likely to emphasise maintaining sufficient coal inventories at thermal power plants, alongside ensuring the availability of gas-based generation where required.

Power producers may be asked to carry out maintenance work well in advance so that generating units remain available during periods of peak demand.

Weather uncertainty keeps government on alert

While the exact impact of El Niño on India’s weather remains uncertain, authorities are adopting a precautionary approach given the potential influence of changing weather patterns on electricity demand, hydropower generation and agricultural activity.

Officials believe early planning will help reduce pressure on the power grid and improve coordination between states and power agencies if demand spikes unexpectedly.

India braces for seasonal demand

India has witnessed record electricity demand in recent summers, prompting the government to step up preparedness measures ahead of extreme weather events.

The proposed advisory is part of broader efforts to strengthen grid reliability and ensure adequate electricity availability across the country during periods of heightened demand.
