Tensions flare in Jenin
Clashes broke out in the Jenin refugee camp on Saturday between Palestinian security forces and militant groups, resulting in at least one fatality. The Palestinian Authority (PA) stated that the operation was aimed at restoring order in the area, which has become a stronghold for militants. However, Hamas and Islamic Jihad condemned the PA’s actions, leading to heightened tensions in the region.
The violence erupted in Jenin, a city in the occupied West Bank, as Palestinian security forces clashed with militants. Explosions and gunshots echoed through the city, reflecting the growing friction between the militant factions and the Western-backed PA of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. This has become a common occurrence as the PA has increased raids in the area in recent months.
At least one person, identified as a militant, was killed during the clashes, although his affiliation has not been officially confirmed by any of the factions. The PA’s security branch explained that the operation was aimed at restoring law and order in Jenin’s historic refugee camp, a stronghold for militants disconnected from the Palestinian leadership.
Hamas, which has been engaged in ongoing conflict with Israeli forces in Gaza, condemned the PA’s actions. Islamic Jihad, another militant group, called for protests in response to the operation.
Jenin has become a focal point of conflict in recent years, particularly since March 2022, when the city and its surrounding areas have been subject to frequent Israeli raids in the wake of Palestinian street attacks.
