Congress remained in unauthorised occupation of its former headquarters at 24 Akbar Road since 2013, with no rent received after the allotment was cancelled

The Congress party has remained in unauthorised occupation of its former headquarters at 24, Akbar Road in New Delhi since June 26, 2013, according to a Right to Information (RTI) reply from the Directorate of Estates under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The RTI response also states that the government has not received any rent for the property since its allotment was cancelled.

The disclosure comes amid renewed focus on government-allotted properties occupied by political parties in the national capital.

    Allotment cancelled in 2013

According to the RTI reply, Bungalow No. 24, Akbar Road was allotted to the Congress party on August 7, 1992. However, the allotment was cancelled with effect from June 26, 2013.

Despite the cancellation, the party has continued to occupy the premises, with the Directorate of Estates categorising the occupation as unauthorised.

No rent received, dues yet to be assessed

The RTI response further states that no rent has been received from the Congress for the property since the cancellation of the allotment.

It also noted that the party’s outstanding dues are currently under review and are yet to be determined, indicating that the government has not finalised the amount recoverable from the Congress.

    Notices not disclosed

The RTI applicant had also sought copies of notices issued to the Congress directing it to vacate the bungalow.

However, the Directorate of Estates declined to provide the records, stating that the information is not maintained in a compiled format and compiling it would disproportionately divert the resources of the public authority under Section 7(9) of the RTI Act.

    Similar issue involving BJP property

The RTI also sought information about 11, Ashoka Road, the Bharatiya Janata Party‘s former headquarters.

According to the Directorate of Estates, the property was allotted to the BJP in 1985, while the status of outstanding dues relating to the property is also under review.

The latest RTI disclosure has once again brought attention to the occupation of government-allotted properties by political parties and the process of recovering dues from such occupants.
