Heavy police deployment near Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid
Security has been significantly tightened near an old mosque in Delhi’s Turkman Gate area after a civic body demolition drive turned violent, prompting stone pelting by local residents, officials said on Thursday.
Heavy police deployment was seen near the Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid, where visuals showed barricades, personnel in large numbers, and bulldozers clearing debris left behind from the demolition exercise. Delhi Police said they have identified at least 30 individuals involved in the stone pelting, using CCTV footage and body-worn camera recordings.
Multiple raids are currently underway in and around the locality to apprehend those involved in the violence, police said.
The incident has taken a political turn after it emerged that Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament Mohibbullah Nadvi was allegedly present at the site during the unrest. Delhi Police said a summons will be issued to the Rampur MP, asking him to join the investigation.
According to sources, Nadvi was present in the area prior to the outbreak of violence and remained there despite repeated requests by senior police officers to leave. A video showing the MP arguing with police personnel near the Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid has since gone viral on social media.
Police have also taken cognisance of several videos circulating online that allegedly attempted to incite violence. Officials said these clips are being scrutinised and the individuals responsible for sharing them will be summoned for questioning.
“A few videos have surfaced on social media in which attempts were made to instigate miscreants. Those responsible will be called for questioning. If any role in a conspiracy is established, strict action will be taken,” a senior police officer said.
