Another attempt to assassinate Donald Trump
Donald Trump is reported safe following an incident involving gunshots near his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, confirmed the former president’s safety but provided no additional details at this time.
The shooting occurred while Trump was golfing at his course. According to the New York Times, local law enforcement officials have detained a “person of interest” and recovered a weapon. Trump was accompanied by his Secret Service detail when the gunfire erupted.
The identity of the shooter or shooters and the motive behind the shots remain unclear. However, CNN reports that security officials believe the shots may have been intended for Trump.
Donald Trump Jr. revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that authorities found an AK-47 rifle hidden in the bushes near where Trump was exiting. He stated, “SHOTS FIRED at Trump Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida. An AK-47 was discovered in the bushes, per local law enforcement.”
The White House has responded swiftly, with both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris briefed on the situation. President Biden condemned the violence, stating, “There is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country.” He assured that his team is ensuring the Secret Service has all the necessary resources to protect the former president.
Vice President Harris expressed relief on social media, saying, “I am glad he is safe.”
This incident follows a recent attack where Trump was injured in the ear during a rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service faced criticism after that event, leading to the resignation of agency head Kimberly Cheatle and the placement of several agents on administrative leave.
