The controversy erupted after footage showed the Kirari MLA signing documents for constituents while dressed in a vest and shorts

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has criticised Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Anil Jha Vats after a video showing him dressed in a vest and shorts while signing documents for constituents went viral on social media.

The Kirari MLA is seen seated on a chair, signing application forms brought by residents, including women, for the Delhi government’s financial assistance scheme. A saffron cloth is seen draped across his lap in the video.

The footage triggered a political row in the Delhi Assembly, with Gupta calling the MLA’s conduct “shameful” and questioning his choice of attire while dealing with members of the public.

    Rekha Gupta demands action

Speaking in the Assembly, Gupta said the MLA should have dressed appropriately, particularly when women were coming to him to get their documents signed.

She also demanded that Vats’ Assembly membership be cancelled, describing his alleged conduct as unacceptable for an elected representative. Her remarks triggered protests from AAP MLAs.

Gupta also accused Vats of making inappropriate gestures during the Assembly proceedings and sought action against him.

    Viral video sparks political controversy

The controversy began after the video of Vats handling documents from constituents circulated widely online.

The footage shows residents approaching the MLA with applications linked to the Delhi government’s women’s financial assistance scheme. The incident has since become a political flashpoint, with the BJP questioning the MLA’s conduct and the AAP defending him against the allegations.

The row has now moved from social media to the floor of the Delhi Assembly, with both sides trading accusations over the MLA’s conduct and the government’s handling of public issues.

Vats rejected the allegations and challenged the Chief Minister to produce video evidence of him making any inappropriate gestures.
