Greenland PM tells Trump to stop “fantasies” of annexation
Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen has pushed back strongly against renewed remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting the annexation of the autonomous Danish territory, declaring that “enough is enough” and rejecting any notion of a takeover.
Nielsen’s remarks came after Trump reiterated his desire to bring Greenland under US control while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday. The US President argued that Greenland is strategically vital for American national security.
In a Facebook post late Sunday, Nielsen said Greenland would not bow to external pressure and insisted that any engagement must respect international law. “This is enough now. No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation. We are open to dialogue and discussions, but this must happen through proper channels and with respect for international law,” he wrote.
Reaffirming Greenland’s sovereignty, Nielsen added, “Greenland is our home and our territory. And that is how it will remain.”
Earlier, Trump said the United States needs Greenland for security reasons, claiming the territory has seen increased activity by Russia and China. “We need Greenland from a national security standpoint. It’s very strategic right now. Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Greenland since before taking office in January last year, and has reiterated similar views in previous interviews, including with The Atlantic. His comments have consistently drawn sharp reactions from leaders in Denmark and Greenland.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Denmark’s Prime Minister said there was no justification for any such move, stressing that the United States has no right to annex any part of the Danish Kingdom. She urged Trump to stop issuing threats against what she described as a historically close ally and a people who have made it clear that Greenland is not for sale.
