
Kuwait fire mishap: Kerala govt announces Rs.5 lakh to kin of dead, ₹Rs.1 lakh to injured
Thirteen of the 14 persons from Kerala have been identified, who died in a fire mishap in Kuwait in the southern city of Al-Mangaf.
The fire that broke out in a labour camp in Kuwait killed 49 employees attached to a Keralite-owned company.
The company is owned by K G Abraham, a Keralite who has varied business interests in the Middle East and also owns a five-star hotel in Kochi.
CM Vijayan called for an emergency cabinet meeting in the morning to take stock of the situation and to decide on the compensation to be given to the affected families. A special cabinet convened announced Rs.5 lakh for the families of the people from Kerala who were killed in the massive fire in Kuwait. Additionally, Rs.1 lakh will be released to those who were injured in the incident
The fire broke out in the building around 4.30 a.m. on Wednesday. According to sources in Kuwait, the toll could have been higher. Around 18 employees, who resided in the ill-fated building, had left the building around 4 a.m. to take up their morning duties.
The news of the death left the families of the victims in a devastated state.
Newly sworn-in Union Minister of State George Kurian said that a MoS Kirthi Vardhan Singh has already left for Kuwait to coordinate the efforts of the Indian Embassy to bring back the bodies of those who lost their lives.
“All arrangements will be made to bring back the bodies of all Indians,” said Minister Kurian.
Meanwhile, a diaspora meeting in the state capital city to be inaugurated on Thursday by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has been cancelled, while the deliberations will be held on Friday and Saturday.
