Anna Hazare chides Arvind Kejriwal over Delhi ‘liquor scam’

As the Centre and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are facing a war of words over the Delhi liquor scam, social activist Anna Hazare slammed Arvind Kejriwal who was once his protégé.

Anna Hazare said that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which came into existence following a massive movement, has also become like any other political party in the country. He said that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has forgotten all the ideologies and values of the movement after coming to power.

In a hard-hitting letter addressed to AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, Anna Hazare reminded Kejriwal of his stance pertaining to liquor shops during his India Against Corruption days. Mentioning that both Kejriwal, as well as Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, appreciated the fact that neither cigarettes nor liquor has been sold in his village Ralegaon Siddhi for the last 35 years, he lamented the U-turn taken by the AAP founder. To buttress his point, he quoted from ‘Swaraj’- the book written by Kejriwal in 2012 before joining politics.

Anna in his letter, “Like the intoxication of alcohol, political power too has its intoxication. You (Kejriwal) too are intoxicated by such power, it seems. The new liquor policy encouraged the sale and consumption of liquor. Liquor shops were being opened in every corner of the city. It’s very bad for the general public.”

Hazare added, “Had expected a similar policy (like Maharashtra’s). But you didn’t do it. People seem to be trapped in a circle of money for power & power for money. It doesn’t suit a party that emerged from a major movement.”

Based on the LG’s recommendations, the CBI had registered an FIR in connection with the alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi government’s Excise Policy 2021-22. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the excise portfolio, is an accused in the case.

Excise officials, liquor company executives, dealers, several unknown public servants, and private persons have been booked in the case by the CBI. The excise policy was subsequently withdrawn by the AAP government.

  1. Govt selling liquor & sponsoring liver & kidney transplantations free of cost i.e. Rs. 30 lakhs per person per transplantation !! Strange are the workings of the govt. But none for an honest man.

  2. No party can succeed in politics, as it exists today, without corruption, as it needs a lot of money. Even the most ideal political party can’t avoid being corrupt.

None of the political parties incl BJP and AAP can be an exception.

Arvind Kejriwal just used IAC to come to power, making wild allegations against Congress and BJP. Not that all his allegations were false. Just that he had no evidence to prove them. He also made tall claims and promises to be a corruption-free party. Since this was the basis on which his party came into existence, people (incl BJP and Cong) have every right to walk all his talk, which he’s unable to (nor does he have the intention to).

I had given some suggestions in my article ( https://www.pgurus.com/mother-of-all-reforms-will-pm-modi-do-it/ ) on how we can root out corruption, but it needs political will. If someone can do it, it is Modi, but does he have the will to do it?
