Police say the adults were carrying fake Aadhaar cards used to buy railway tickets to Jammu and Bengaluru
Assam Police detained 27 Bangladeshi nationals, including 11 women and children, in two separate operations in Guwahati and Bongaigaon on the night of September 16, officials said. The detainees, who authorities allege had entered India illegally, lacked valid travel documents.
How The Two Groups Were Caught
Acting on specific intelligence, Guwahati’s city police border division apprehended 12 people at the ASTC campus in Paltan Bazar, near Guwahati railway station. During questioning, police learned that a second group from the same network had already boarded the Jammu Tawi Express. That group, comprising 15 people, was intercepted and detained by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Bongaigaon. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Border) Kulendra Nath Deka said all 27 detainees hailed from Bangladesh’s Dhaka, Sonamganj, Bagherhat, Gopalganj and Mymensingh districts.
The Route They Allegedly Took
According to police, the group had gathered in Mymensingh with the help of local touts before making their way to the zero point on the India-Bangladesh border. From there, they allegedly crossed into Meghalaya on foot through trails at Dawki, travelled by car to Jorabat on the Assam-Meghalaya border, and continued to Guwahati by auto rickshaw — where the first group was ultimately caught. The group intercepted on the train was reportedly headed to Jammu, promised labour jobs by the touts, while the group picked up in Guwahati was believed to be travelling onward to Bengaluru.
Forged Documents, A Recurring Transit Point
Police said the adults in both groups were carrying fake Aadhaar cards, used to purchase their railway tickets, allegedly procured with the help of the same touts who facilitated their entry into India. Officials noted that Guwahati has repeatedly surfaced as a key transit hub for undocumented migrants entering through the Dawki route before dispersing to other parts of the country. Legal proceedings have been initiated against all 27 detainees, and police said they would be repatriated in accordance with the law.
