Escalation comes amid renewed fighting between Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for a missile and drone attack on a Saudi military base in the kingdom’s south, marking another escalation in the rapidly worsening conflict.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted the Sharurah military base with missiles and drones. According to the claim, weapons depots and command-and-control centres were among the targets.

The Houthis said the operation was carried out in response to continued Saudi military action against their positions in Yemen and warned that attacks could become larger and reach deeper into Saudi territory if Riyadh continues its operations.

Saudi authorities have not confirmed the Houthi claim regarding the Sharurah base.

The latest attack comes amid a sharp escalation in fighting between the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces, which are backed by Saudi Arabia. The renewed clashes have forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes, with the UN migration agency reporting that around 76,000 people have been displaced since July.

Saudi Arabia has also faced other recent Houthi attacks. Saudi Civil Defence said a projectile landed in the Jazan region near the Yemeni border, injuring two people and damaging a mosque, buildings and vehicles.

The escalation follows major territorial advances by the Houthis along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including the capture of the strategic port city of Mocha. Their expanding presence near the Bab al-Mandab Strait has raised concerns over one of the world’s key maritime trade routes.

The Houthis have increasingly targeted Saudi military and economic infrastructure in recent days. Earlier attacks included strikes involving missiles and drones against areas around Abha, Jizan and Najran, as well as a Saudi military base at Khamis Mushait.

The latest developments threaten to widen the Yemen conflict and increase pressure on Saudi Arabia as Riyadh attempts to contain the Houthi advance and protect its southern border and vital Red Sea interests.
