From huge debts to dangerous border crossings, the so-called shortcut to America can end in exploitation, detention and deportation
A tearful video message from a Punjabi man allegedly stranded in Mexico has once again exposed the dangers of the illegal migration route popularly known as the ‘donkey route’ to the United States. In the video, the man reportedly warns others against making the same mistake, describing the ordeal as a nightmare and urging people not to risk their lives chasing an illegal route to the US.
The video has gone viral amid growing concerns over Indians falling prey to agents who promise them a passage to the US through irregular and dangerous routes.
‘I made a mistake’
In the emotional appeal, the Punjab man appears distressed as he speaks about his situation in Mexico. His central message is stark: he made a mistake by choosing the illegal route and does not want others to repeat it.
The so-called donkey route involves migrants travelling through multiple countries and attempting to cross difficult terrain and heavily guarded borders before reaching the US. The journey can expose migrants to exploitation, extortion, violence, harsh weather and the risk of being detained or deported.
For many aspiring migrants from Punjab and other parts of India, agents sell the route as a shortcut to the American dream. In reality, the journey can turn into a dangerous trap.

A dangerous journey sold as a dream
Cases documented over the past year have highlighted how migrants have paid tens of lakhs of rupees to agents, only to face dangerous journeys, deception and financial ruin.
In one previously reported case, a Haryana youth said he paid around ₹50 lakh to agents before being cheated, threatened and allegedly tortured during an illegal journey towards the US.
Another investigation into deported Indians found that migrants had mortgaged homes and borrowed heavily to finance their journeys. Some said they had been promised legal travel but were later pushed onto illegal routes.
The problem has also prompted action against illegal immigration agents. Data cited by The Migration Story showed that 69 FIRs were registered against illegal travel agents in Punjab in 2025, compared with 38 in 2024.
The price of chasing the American dream
The latest video is therefore more than one migrant’s desperate appeal. It is a warning about an organised ecosystem that profits from the aspirations of people desperate for better economic opportunities abroad.
For families who sell property, borrow heavily or mortgage their homes to finance these journeys, failure can mean not only deportation but years of debt.
The message emerging from such cases is increasingly clear: the donkey route is not a shortcut to the American dream—it can become a nightmare with life-changing consequences.
