IAF honey trap case: Wing Commander arrested after surveillance over alleged defence leak
An Indian Air Force Wing Commander was arrested by Delhi Police after being kept under active surveillance over allegations that he leaked sensitive defence information to a woman suspected of being linked to Pakistani intelligence.
The officer was arrested following inputs from the IAF’s intelligence wing and is currently in judicial custody. He has been booked under the Official Secrets Act in connection with the alleged leak of classified and sensitive defence-related information.
Investigators are now probing the full extent of the alleged information leak and whether the officer was part of a wider espionage network targeting India’s defence establishment.
Surveillance preceded arrest
The officer had reportedly come under the IAF intelligence wing’s watch after authorities developed suspicions about his activities and communications.
The surveillance reportedly helped investigators piece together his interactions with the woman and examine the information he allegedly shared with her.
Woman allegedly used social media to honey-trap officer
According to investigators, the Wing Commander was allegedly approached by a woman through social media. Their conversations reportedly became more frequent, including regular video calls, allowing the woman to gain his trust.
Police suspect that the relationship was deliberately cultivated as part of a honey-trap operation.
The woman allegedly began seeking information relating to the military, following which the officer is accused of sharing photographs, videos, details of military movements and other sensitive information with her through digital channels.
Investigators suspect that the woman may have been working for or on behalf of Pakistani intelligence.
Suspicious app adds another layer to probe
The investigation has also uncovered an alleged attempt to gain access to another defence-linked device.
According to investigators, the woman allegedly asked the Wing Commander to install a particular application on a colleague’s mobile phone.
Authorities suspect that the application could have been spyware or remote-access software capable of accessing information stored on the device or monitoring its activity.
The alleged attempt has raised concerns that the operation may have been aimed at compromising more than one defence personnel and obtaining access to a wider pool of sensitive information.
The case is therefore being investigated not simply as an isolated leak but as a possible part of a larger espionage operation.
Officer now in judicial custody
The Wing Commander’s arrest followed the surveillance conducted by the IAF intelligence wing and the subsequent police investigation. With the officer now in judicial custody, agencies are continuing to examine his digital trail and alleged contacts to establish the full extent of the suspected security breach.
