India, China to hold talks in Beijing, border issues on agenda
India and China will resume their Special Representative (SR) dialogue on border issues after a gap of five years, with the 23rd round of talks scheduled to take place in Beijing on Wednesday, December 18. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the meeting, highlighting that the discussions will focus on managing peace and tranquility along the border regions and exploring a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” solution to the long-standing boundary issue.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will lead the Indian delegation, while Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will represent China in the talks. The last SR dialogue was held in New Delhi in December 2019.
The revival of the dialogue mechanism was agreed upon during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23. This agreement came just two days after both countries reached a pact for disengagement in the Demchok and Depsang areas of eastern Ladakh, which had been sources of friction.
The military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, which began in May 2020, saw a deadly clash at the Galwan Valley in June of that year, significantly straining relations between the two neighboring countries. However, the standoff has de-escalated following the completion of the disengagement process at the last two friction points, Demchok and Depsang, under an agreement finalized on October 21.
Two days after the disengagement pact was signed, Modi and Xi engaged in talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The upcoming SR dialogue represents a significant step in normalizing relations and addressing ongoing border tensions between India and China.
