India condemns attack, urges Pakistan to address internal challenges
India on Friday strongly rejected “any and every” allegation linking it to a deadly suicide bombing at a Shia Mosque in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, calling such claims baseless and pointless.
Responding to allegations circulating in Pakistan, India condemned the bombing and expressed condolences to the victims, while firmly rejecting any suggestion of its involvement.
“The bombing at an Islamabad Mosque earlier today is condemnable, and India condoles the loss of life it has caused. It is unfortunate that, instead of seriously addressing the problems plaguing its social fabric, Pakistan should choose to delude itself by blaming others for its home-grown ills. India rejects any and every such allegation,” the statement said.
India reiterated that terrorism remains a serious internal challenge for Pakistan and called for a focus on addressing domestic security and radicalisation issues rather than externalising blame.
The reaction came hours after a powerful explosion ripped through the Tarlai Imambargah in the Shehzad Town area, killing at least 69 people and injuring 169 others, according to Pakistani media reports.
Suicide bomber strikes during afternoon hours
According to security officials quoted by The Times of Islamabad, a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the main gate of the Shia place of worship during afternoon hours, when worshippers were present inside the shrine.
Officials said the attacker was stopped by alert security guards at the entrance, preventing him from entering the main prayer hall. Despite the interception, the blast caused extensive damage to the gate and surrounding structures.
Video footage from the site showed shattered windows of nearby buildings, debris strewn across the road, and severe structural damage at the entrance. Several bodies were seen lying amid the rubble, highlighting the intensity of the explosion.
Initial reports indicated at least 31 fatalities, but later updates from Pakistani media raised the toll to 69 dead, with 169 people injured. Many of the wounded were rushed to hospitals across Islamabad, where emergency measures were put in place.
