Jaishankar’s talks with Iran ensure safe route for Indian oil shipments
In a significant diplomatic breakthrough for New Delhi amid growing global energy concerns, S. Jaishankar held talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, following which Iran agreed to allow Indian oil tankers safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, sources said.
The development is being viewed as an example of India’s proactive diplomacy at a time when escalating tensions in West Asia have severely disrupted maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.
Key route for global energy trade
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow but strategically vital maritime corridor connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. It serves as one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.
A substantial portion of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes through the strait, making any disruption a major concern for international energy markets and oil-importing nations.
Relief for India amid global energy concerns
With maritime traffic through the route affected due to the ongoing tensions in West Asia, concerns had been mounting over energy supplies for major importing nations, including India.
Iran’s decision to permit Indian tankers to pass through the strait after high-level diplomatic engagement is expected to provide relief for India’s energy security and ensure continuity in crude oil shipments.
The move highlights India’s diplomatic outreach in maintaining critical energy supply chains during a period of heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the region.
